Compiled by his disciples long after his death, the Analects consists of brief, fragmented conversations and aphorisms rather than a structured philosophical treatise.

Confucius viewed filial piety as the root of all moral character. He believed that respect learned within the family naturally extended outward to obedience to the state.

Often called the Silver Rule, this principle is famously phrased in the Analects as: "What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others."

Confucius argued that leading by moral virtue inspires genuine self-correction. He warned that relying on strict laws only teaches citizens how to evade punishment.
