As groundwater is pumped to supply the population, the dried clay of the former Lake Texcoco compresses, causing parts of the city to sink up to 20 inches per year.

Lebanese arrivals in the 1930s introduced lamb roasted on a vertical spit. Mexican cooks later adapted this method by swapping lamb for marinated pork and adding pineapple.

The city boasts over 150 museums covering diverse subjects. The world-renowned National Museum of Anthropology alone houses the largest collection of ancient Mexican art.

Known as chinampas, these artificial islands were created by piling mud and vegetation in shallow lakes to form highly productive agricultural plots for the Aztec Empire.
